View looking south from the Calle de San Nicolas by the Iglesia de San Nicholas in the Albaycin of Granada. This is the usual viewing point for the Alhambra – it’s one of the few places in Granada where you can get high enough to get a decent perspective across the small valley at the northern foot of the Alhambra.

Visitor note: buy your tickets in advance – don’t go on the day and hope tickets will be available. Hope is not a good strategy.

I'll admit I have a real problem with competitions like this - there's a real emphasis/priority on the 'other', on third world communities living in 'authentic' ways or in the 'non-modern' aspects of the modern world. The photos are great, but it's the lack of imagination in the themes and the predictability of many of the winners that is downright depressing.

This is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t use apertures below f16 – what you gain in potential depth of field you lose in shake and silly slow shutter speeds. If this had been shot at f16, ISO 200, with -1ev as it should have been, then this would have been tack sharp and worth keeping. As it is the light is fine, the clouds are good, the composition is ok… but its’ not sharp. And you will go through a phase in your photography where if it’s not sharp you don’t think twice before deleting – the sooner you get to that the better.
