Sir John Betjeman hailed Edwin Smith as a ‘genius at photography’ and you can see why, as he made the ordinary rich and astonishing, from ‘herring girls’ gutting fish in the 30s to a woman hanging out her washing in an almighty gust of wind in rural Scotland in the 50s.
